Ants

Hmmmm look what I found while watering the greenhouse last night... An ants nest poking through some spring onions!

In fact there were three of the blighters the more I looked around. How rude! I've got some ant powder that I could put down but I'm not sure it's safe so close to food crops. Does anyone know the best way of getting rid of them?

Other than that, the greenhouse is looking great, full to bursting yet actually semi-organised which is a first for us. I'll do a proper update at the weekend as work is calling...

Proprietary Ant Powder is the only way, I think. Some of them are billed as safe for use near food crops, but you'd better check very carefully!

Ants are one thing I've never been troubled with, I hope I haven't just jinxed myself saying that. Your greenhouse looks very organised, I'd love one bigger than my little 4X6.

Ants hate cloves - I kept them out of my last house by sprinkling ground cloves round the holes where they used to get in. So you could try scattering ground cloves round the area and see if that makes them move. I've heard they also hate mint, but I haven't tried that one. How about drenching the soil with mint/clove tea??

Oooh, I've also heard of killing ants off by feeding them borax mixed with sugar. You'd have to read up on that one though, I'm not sure how it works.

We uncovered an ants nest in a simlar way once and was fascinated as they collected the grubs and carted then away.

I hesitate to say it but boiling water is very effective.
